About Bacterial Vaginosis
What is
bacterial vaginosis?
Bacterial vaginosis is vaginal condition that results from an
overgrowth of normal bacteria in the vagina. Bacterial vaginosis
is not dangerous, but it can cause very uncomfortable symptoms.
If you think you have bacterial vaginosis, it is best to be
professionally diagnosed to you are sure that you’re not
confusing the symptoms with a more serious vaginal condition or
STD.
Some people with bacterial vaginosis show no symptoms or do not
know they have symptoms. In fact, more than one in six pregnant
women in the United States has bacterial vaginosis, and many are
unaware of their condition.
What
causes bacterial vaginosis?
Researchers haven’t agreed on what causes bacterial vaginosis.
They believe that that a combination of multiple bacteria must
be present together for the problem to develop. One type of
bacteria must decrease while another type of bacteria becomes
more concentrated. Because of this lack of agreement, Bacterial Vaginosis is difficult to diagnose and treat. It is unknown why
certain bacteria combine to cause the infection.
