About Trichomoniasis

What is Trichomoniasis and what causes it?

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (or sexually-transmitted disease, STD) caused by a microscopic parasite (Trichomonad), usually found in the vagina and urethral tissues. This condition is most common in women but can also be present in men. It is unclear why women are infected more often than men. Approximately 174 million people worldwide are infected with Trichomoniasis each year, making it the most common curable sexually transmitted infection worldwide.

How do I prevent transmitting Trichomoniasis?

Because Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease, the best way to prevent it is to abstain from sexual activity. If are do have sex, wear a condom and wash before and after intercourse. Trichomonads (the parasite) can survive for up to 45 minutes outside of the body, so it may live on clothing or textiles after an infected person has used them. Just to be safe, don’t share towels or swimsuits with other people, and shower immediately after swimming in a public pool.

Since Trichomoniasis is curable, it is not very serious; yet, it is contagious. If untreated, it may infect tissues throughout the urinary tract and reproductive system. Trichomoniasis may lead to preterm labor if left untreated during pregnancy. One third of women with Trichomoniasis do not show symptoms, so if you are planning a pregnancy get tested for Trichomoniasis so you can treat it before it causes complications.
